Our Church History

In 1891, The Avenue was started as a small Sunday School Mission meeting on the second floor of a building on the corner of Independence and Elmwood Avenue, and was originally known as the Elmwood Baptist Church.   The church, having a rich heritage in the Historic Northeast area,  has changed both name and location several times throughout its history, and is now located on Jackson Avenue, just off of Independence Avenue.

The church, as it exists today, is almost an entirely new church since 2006.  In every way, a new church has been planted within an awesome old building.

Though our name and location may have changed over the last 120 years, our commitment to hold fast to the truth of Scripture within this community remains steadfast.

We continue to teach, train, disciple, and equip the church as we strive to take Christ into every part of our community.
